I graduated…now what?!

Check it out! I got one of those dinky grad hats…WOOT! Peace out, SFU!
I graduated!
So…old news if you keep up with my Facebook profile, but yes, I can say that I finally did it! I graduated!!! 4.5 years later, ginormous word counts, and the wonderful memories I’ve created with all the people I have ever met at SFU — thank you!  I definitely feel accomplished and although I technically completed all my courses and requirements in December, I finally feel like, “Wow, now the real world is here”.  I have no excuses anymore, no more dilly-dallying. It is my time to carve out the person who I want to be.

Graduated from SFU

I have set new goals for myself, for my future, and my business. For myself, budgeting and saving money is a big one.  Definitely starting that next month (aka first pay cheque of July aka next week, eek!). Vancouver is an unaffordable city but I still am aiming to own my own place.  The dream was a house, but realistically (as realistic as I can be by living in this city), looking at a condo. Two years. 2014 is the goal.

Me and Sheri Fabian

Also starting on my next payday is enrolling in the real estate course at UBC. Yep. Trying to take my future seriously. Yep. It’s another 180 degrees. Yep. Yep. Yep. Realize that I don’t want to do anything in criminology at this point anymore…unless I want to relocate or subject myself to 12-hour shift work positions. For those who don’t know, my dad is a very well-known realtor in this city, especially in the Filipino community who is passionate about his occupation and is so very excited to help me embark on this new journey. I am glad to finally receive support from my family — means a lot to me. I plan to complete it by the end of this year, December 31st, 2012.

Business-wise? I’m just running with it at the moment.  Ideally, I would still love to run Dolce Delights full-time. I have had a couple opportunities arise for me to grow the business — it’s just a matter of how I want to grow it. And honestly, the time is now to take risks, challenge myself, and see where this can go. But it needs to be planned. It needs to be calculated. And it needs to be smart. To be honest, I didn’t know what I was doing and I still kind of don’t know what I’m doing with the business. But it’s really time to start thinking and doing this thoroughly.

Juan and me

Although it really took me 4.5 years to complete my undergrad and a mere two hour ceremony for me to walk across that podium and stage, it was really a big milestone for me. And that simple stride pretty much signified a mark of change in my life. Time to start making “big” decisions and join the rest of the adults in this world… hooray?

SFU Criminology

Gosh, I am so backed up on posts at this point. Next post… my trip to Montreal! Stay tuned.

I’m done university!

Kind of a delayed post, but after 4.5 years at SFU, I have finally completed my undergrad. YES!  As of Friday at 4:42pm, I completed and handed in my final report for my practicum at the FREDA Centre. On Tuesday evening, I emailed my last ever research project (32 pages!!!) to my prof. Done and done. And it feels so good. Been celebrating all week. Now, I’ve just got to wait six months for my June 2012 convocation.

In the meantime…

Me, Aaron, and Mel

…I’ve been catching up with some old friends with some Cupcake Vineyards wine, eating honey-roasted ham at midnight in random art galleries, taking pictures in the middle of the street while dressing up as a hippie prostitute, celebrating peoples’ birthdays, and baking a ton! I also have a new job. The end.

November nights.

Halloween decorations are stored away, red Starbucks Christmas cups are out, and there’s a certain chill in the air. November. Papers due, presentations soon, stressin’ like there’s no tomorrow. November. Amidst all the craziness and under the billions of layers that I am wearing, I’m still happy that it’s November….because that means Christmas is soon!!!

Long weekend was last weekend and it was barely that. Always wish long weekends were longer. Didn’t get up to much. Made some new friends (hi Sam!), watched some basketball (SFU vs. NDNU season opener….we won 74-70!), and partied the night away (at the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange). Pictorial accompaniment is as follows.

….and currently on cloud 9 cus I just got back from the Lights concert at the Vogue Theatre. My post on that tomorrow!!!

More exciting news!

And to continue with yesterday’s post, here’s what else I’ve been doing but with my cupcake company, Dolce Delights!

Young Women in Business (YWiB) SFU Launch Party

YWiB SFUAs a proud member of YWiB SFU, I was completely thrilled when they contacted me to partner up for the 2011 launch party. Sadly, I wasn’t even there! I heard it was a blast, however, and the cupcakes were gone within minutes. Looked like a super fun event though!

Invito Couture Grand Reopening Party

Dolce Delights at Invito Couture Grand ReopeningAnother event that I sadly had to have missed. Invito Couture, a store selling beautiful gowns and cocktail dresses imported from Turkey, recently moved to a bigger and better (and more suitable) location on South Granville. The night was filled with wine and cupcakes — match made in heaven.

SFU Student Entrepreneur of the Year 2011

SFU Student Entrepreneur of the YearSEY. Okay, this is actually something I have been waiting for since last year. The name’s pretty self-explanatory. Hesitant to compete last year, I felt that I was ready for the competition this time around. Currently in the preliminary rounds, I’ll get to know if I made the second phase by Halloween. Crossing fingers. It’s kind of a really big deal and I am so excited to be taking part in this!

The 2011 Notable Awards

2011 Notable Awards Now this one came as a complete surprise to me. I noticed an ad in the Metro paper last week that nominations were ending for the Notable Awards. What’s that? It’s basically an award that recognizes up-and-coming young professionals in various categories all across Canada. I had nothing to lose… and guess what… I MADE IT IN THE TOP 10 IN THE LIFESTYLE SERVICES CATEGORY! What the HELL. Pretty exciting news. Big deal? Kinda. I’m up against two Food Network chefs (OMG CHUCK HUGHES!!!) and local foodies, Erin Ireland and Gourmet Fury! Finalists go to Toronto nexts month for the actual awards ceremony. Please vote for me?!

And that’s, that! Some sweet news may materialize within the next week or so. God. I love being 22.

What’s up, doc?

Here’s a look at my last couple months of being 21 (aka what I’ve been up to lately). This is so long overdue. Prepare yourselves for a super picture heavy blog post!

SASSquatch 2011
So, after a long couple months of intense planning, the newly founded Society of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS) put on a very successful and first ever, Arts Frosh aka SASSquatch 2011! We were nearly sold out with 130 froshees and a solid team of team leaders, coordinators, and culinary team. It was a multiday event at Camp Howdy near White Pine Beach filled with initation, toga parties, activities, late night dance parties, wrestling matches, skits, rain, and ultimately, bonding time! I had such a blast! Finally got my “frosh” experience at SFU. Yay!

Ashoka’s Be a Changemaker Challenge
AshokaAs I was a past participant in Young Women in Business’ (YWiB) Project GIVE, a program that introduced me to the concept of social entrepreneurship, I knew I had to check out this free bootcamp and get my #socent juices going again. This event was exclusive to UBC and SFU students and sold out days before. It was both eye-opening and inspiring; really made me consider if our old group wanted to pursue our old social enterprise project, Day in the Life, a program designed to connect youth in highschools with professionals in their dream job.

Red Bull Thre3style

My friend B works at Red Bull and I was her plus one at this event. The Red Bull Thre3style is a DJ competition that occurs throughout North America (westcoast, eastcoast, etc.) that highlights that region’s best DJs. Hedspin won — Vancouver represent! Can’t wait til the finals which happen later next month at the Commodore. Stoked.

Graffiti Party

Graffiti PartyFollowing our success with SASSquatch, SASS put on yet another nearly sold out event — Graffiti Party! This event took place at SFU’S Highland Pub (newly refurbished and renovated) and it was honestly so much fun! First doodle/graffiti party I’ve been oo… reminds me of the highschool days! Ironically, wearing my white private school dress shirt too… haha. Good times!

SASSquatch, SFU Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences’ FIRST EVER frosh event is finally debuting TOMORROW! I never had a frosh and thank god I’m an event coordinator so I get to go and experience, well, HISTORY! That’s one thing to check off my post-secondary bucket list. Just hope the sun will come out! Check out our sweet promo vid! Can’t wait!
